The UK freight industry will not accept escalating fuel prices without a fight.
Its 'FairFuelUK' campaign representatives, which include the Freight Transport Association and Road Haulage Association, have garnered the support of Robert Halfon MP (Conservative, Harlow), who has agreed to seek an explanation as to why the pump price of fuel has hardly dropped despite the significant fall in oil prices.
"This is a tremendous step forward in the fight for a fair price for fuel," said FairFuelUK spokesperson Peter Carroll, quoted in Transport Newsbrief. "We are pleased that Robert Halfon is prepared to add his voice to our campaign. We are even more delighted at his support for the formation of an all-party group to endorse the fact that fuel prices and fuel duty stay high on the political agenda."
This is followed by a somewhat cynical response from an observer who comments: "Does he really believe a politician of any persuasion will have either the political will or influence to reduce fuel prices by some 30pence per litre, which is somewhere where it needs to be if this industry is to avoid losing even more transport organisations?"
